......a cliff-top villa eco-house, "stunning " said the Head of Planning
The site has stunning views over the North Sea so the key principle was to design to focus on that view. Every space therefore needed to look out to sea and this was achieved by employing a glass wall to the enclosed areas and ensure space around allowed views also.
This could not compromise the needs to have an energy efficient design and respond to the limits of the site with only an East facing view to sea. Passive solar design requires a South direction to absorb solar energy. Then there is a need to provide for West facing direct sunshine for the evening period. The volume of the building was organised to provide a South facing garden with boundary space to the East view so all prime space looked out and broke out toward the sea. A primary façade was placed to the South garden and that enabled a glass wall facing South for solar energy gain. To the far South was a neighbouring tall building, so we formed a garage, workshop and study to guide the view out to sea and not at the neighbour. To the west high level glazing was placed with a light-well allowing a sunset view of bright orange light to bounce through the house.
This all enabled the focus to the sea without compromising those views, solar gain nor the benefits of direct natural sunlight.
