Built Vision 2
2A- Low House
.....an earth-sheltered eco-house, "Architecture of the highest order" Inspector
The essence was a true C21st building sitting-in & as one with the landscape, to respect the highly sensitive historic place, a Clunniac Priory, next to a Grade 1 Listed Church & Ancient Monument in a Coservation Area, AONB, surrounded by Listed Buildings on all sides. The area was highly restricted and no one believed it was possible to obtain a house outside the village boundary in The Heritage Coast here.
By utilising a level difference we inserted the house into a natural South-West facing bank so the roof was level to the upper ground and become the gardens, blending into the existing land. The village then looks straight over the whole, not perceiving a building....a haw-haw in effect.
With a glass wall surrounding a lower courtyard, the primary outdoor space is totally secluded becoming a sun trap, focused on a swimming pond feature and the greater estate parkland beyond.
The earth mass is used as a massive thermal store heat sink, and stabilises the temperatures absorbing summer excess for winter reheating naturally.
